My Safe Florida Home Program Reopens with $280 Million in Grants
As of Monday, August 4, the My Safe Florida Home program is officially open for applications again, and this year, $280 million in grant funding is available to help Florida homeowners strengthen their homes against hurricanes.
If you’re a homeowner in Central Florida, this is a big opportunity to protect your property and potentially lower your insurance premiums.
What Is the Program?
The My Safe Florida Home program provides free wind mitigation inspections and matching grants (up to $10,000) for upgrades like impact-resistant windows, roof reinforcements, and more. These improvements make homes more storm-resilient and can lead to insurance discounts.
Since the program’s relaunch in 2022, over 39,000 homeowners have received funding for improvements.
Who Can Apply for My Florida Safe Home Grants?
To be eligible for My Florida Safe Home funds, homeowners must meet the following criteria:
-
Live in a site-built, single-family home or townhouse in Florida
-
Have a current homestead exemption
-
Own a home with an insured value of $700,000 or less (exemption for low-income applicants)
-
Home was built before January 1, 2008
-
Complete a wind mitigation inspection first
The program prioritizes low- and moderate-income households, especially seniors over age 60. Low-income homeowners may qualify without having to contribute financially, while others provide a small match (e.g., $1 for every $2 the state provides).
